Unbekannter Hersteller, This illustration of a musical box factory has No. 831 written in the bottom right corner. The image is probably a view of Saint Croix but this has not been confirmed. The tunes are Scottish traditional airs. The tune Within a Mile of Edinburgh was written by Englishman James Hook (1746-1827) to words written by Englishman Thomas D´Urfey (1653-1723). Hook was a pioneer of comic ballads similar to the songs used in Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas. Despite its English origins, the tune has become part of Scottish tradition.
