Charles Henri Ghys, *1839, †1908, was a French pianist, organist and composer, primarily known today as the first piano teacher of Maurice Ravel The Air du Roi Louis XIII, also known as Amaryllis or Gavotte, was one of Ghys' most successful works. There are various transcriptions for different instruments, some of them done by the composer himself. Erroneously attributed to Louis XIII under the title of Amaryllis, the music was really by Baltasar de Beaujoyeulx, from the Ballet Comique de la Reine associated with Henry III (1581), often referred to as the first “ballet de cour”.
