The tunes are Scottish traditional airs. The tune `Within a Mile of Edinburgh´ was written by Englishman James Hook (1746-1827) to words written by Englishman Thomas D´Urfey (1653-1723). Hook was a pioneer of comic ballads similar to the songs used in Gilbert & Sullivan comic operas. Despite its English origins, the tune has become part of Scottish tradition.
