N° 43603: Bells Drum & Castanets in Sight, 1st: Home sweet home
A magnificent exhibition piece orchestral music box made by the prestigious firm of Paillard of St Croix, Switzerland in c. 1885.
This large and important music box features a musical movement with a snare drum, a woodblock castanet, and 6 bells with bright enamel finials struck by an array of beautiful enamelled bee and butterfly strikers. All of these orchestral sections can be engaged and disengaged at will using the levers at the front of the box.
The movement also features a tune indicator (referencing the original Paillard tunesheet above); a tune selector; a parachute safety check; and an extra large lever-wound double-spring for longer playing time. The cylinder is an impressive 17 3/8” / 44cm in length.
The music box plays a selection of 12 operatic and popular tunes including the William Tell Overture, The Wedding March, Home Sweet Home, Bellini’s Norma and The Pirates of Penzance.
It is housed in a beautiful rosewood-veneered case with kingwood banding, boxwood stringing, and an inlay of a bird looking at a snake in a fruit tree to the lid.
It has a first-class sound and is all in original condition.
